Head Gardener - Live Out - EC6843

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a head gardener to manage and develop the gardens surrounding a magnificent Grade II listed hall on the beautiful coast of Northumberland.

Located in an idyllic situation combining both rural and coastal views, the gardens consist of three and a half acres of formal gardens and two and a half acres of roadside woodland. The owners have recently purchased the property and the gardens are about to undergo redevelopment by a prominent garden designer/ RHS ambassador. The plans have been prepared for the garden and the successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to work closely with the garden designer in implementing the various projects across the garden.

A naturalistic area is located on the boundary of the property and will include woodland, long grasses with wildflowers, a large pond and lawns. The formal gardens will be separated into garden rooms including a walled area incorporating a greenhouse with cold frames and raised beds for growing cut flowers and vegetables. In addition, there will be herbaceous borders, ornamental meadows with topiary shapes, a rose garden with mixed herbaceous planting, mown and gravel paths throughout, a variety of specimen trees and shrubs and working compost area.

The garden will host a wealth of plants and shrubs and the owners are looking for someone to really take ownership of the gardens, realise their vision and work closely with the garden designer to achieve that vision. The head gardener will manage a small team including a part time gardener, a contractor for the lawncare and a part time tree surgeon. He / she will have excellent horticultural and plant knowledge as well as plant husbandry skills. A knowledge of pest and disease control as well and PA1/PA6 spray certificates would be an advantage.

Applicants will ideally hold a level 3 horticultural qualification plus at least 5 years garden development experience on a private estate. He / She will have good communications skills and the ability to work alongside other staff and oversee contractors. They will have a flexible approach to work, be physically fit and should be prepared to work outside in all weathers. Driving licence and the ability to operate a range of garden machinery would be an advantage.

The position would suit a head gardener with experience in redeveloping gardens looking for an exciting new challenge and to manage a beautiful and diverse garden.

SALARY:        £35,000 – £40,000 depending on experience
