Job Details

The Trust is recruiting a full-time Senior Gardener to work principally at Hall’s Croft but also across our five garden sites.

You will be principally responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and presentation of the garden to a high standard. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the development of this garden and reflect its Jacobean and medicinal history. Hall’s Croft is a charming one acre garden with lots of potential, including a Kitchen Garden, mixed borders, medicinal garden, and the new project of redesigning the Jacobean borders.

Through horticultural excellence you will work across these nationally and internationally recognised gardens and share our stories with our many visitors and stakeholders.

To be successful in this role you will have horticulture qualifications and experience of working in gardens that are open to the public. You will have a good knowledge of plants and their husbandry, horticultural methods and practices, and Health and Safety best practice.

You will need to be able to operate on your own initiative but also to work as a member of a team, and to supervise students and volunteers. Also you will be able to develop strong working relationships within the Hall’s Croft site team, the Town Gardens Team Leader, and the wider Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

The post holder may be required to work at weekends and bank holidays. There may also be a need to work evenings when there are special events.

The closing date for applications is Sunday 30th June 2019, and interviews will take place on Wednesday 10th July 2019.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is the independent charity that cares for the world's greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in Stratford-Upon-Avon, and promoted the enjoyment and understanding of his works, life and times all over the world. Celebrating Shakespeare is at the heart of everything we do.

Why Work With Us:

Stratford-upon-Avon is most famous for being the birthplace and beloved home town of William Shakespeare, but there may be more things to do in Stratford-upon-Avon than you realise. Now a bustling market town, Stratford is steeped in charm and history, offering the perfect destination for life-long Shakespeare lovers and the unconverted alike!

In between visits to Shakespeare’s family homes, hunt for treasures in the vibrant mix of independent, boutique and high street stores of Stratford’s pretty town centre. When you’re ready to refuel you’ll find a fantastic choice of tea rooms, restaurants and bars.

Sit back and relax on the banks of the River Avon or gain a whole new perspective from the water, with your choice of boat hire and river cruises. Look out for local events in the riverside area of Bancroft Gardens and soak up the community atmosphere at a range of music festivals, farmers markets and more.

Take a walking tour, hop onto an open top bus or hire a bicycle to explore further afield, including a pleasant stroll from Stratford-upon-Avon town centre to the beautifully picturesque Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.

Theatre lovers won’t want to miss the opportunity to experience the world famous Royal Shakespeare Company in its home setting, with a variety of performances from today’s writers as well as the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Other indoor attractions include Stratford Butterfly Farm and the MAD Museum, so there’s plenty to keep the whole family occupied in any weather.
