An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Gardener to join a great team with ambitious plans. Wasing Estate is a progressive and diverse modern Estate comprising a total area of approximately 4,000 acres. As one of the Country’s most acclaimed Wedding venues the grounds and parkland are of critical importance. You will need a passion for plants, the landscaped environment, an eye for detail, to work well on own and in a team. 

The Gardener is responsible for supporting the Head Gardener in all aspects of the maintenance and improvement of Estate grounds and 24 acres of ornamental gardens on this privately owned Estate.

Key Areas

  • Working with the Head Gardener to maintain the gardens to an agreed style and standard set by the Head Gardener
  • Help to develop new areas of the garden
  • Propagate and grow on plants for use in the gardens
  • Assist with fruit tree pruning and harvesting of apples and pears
  • Maintain the amenity areas of the estate, including lawns, woodland, meadows and tree avenues in conjunction with the Estate team
  • Contribute towards the planning of projects to help the Estate continue to enhance and improve the gardens
  • Be part of a team that ensure the optimum deployment of staff and resource within a work environment that fosters individual commitment, confidence, creativity and enthusiasm and open and effective communication on work related issues among staff
  • Have a willingness to undertake a wider range of other duties as required by the estate

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • A horticultural qualification is required
  • Minimum 2 years relevant experience in professional garden maintenance
  • Good working knowledge of gardens and their management. Knowledge of various propagation techniques would be beneficial
  • Good plant knowledge
  • Experience of a variety of garden machinery
  • Understanding of good Health and Safety practices in horticulture

Skills

  • Practical horticulture
  • Excellent customer communication and relationship building skills
  • Able to operate within a team or on own initiative

Requirement

  • Full Drivers licence including trailer test if applicable

  • PA1 & PA6
  • Chainsaw certificate
  • First aid qualification
