The Falkirk Council area is changing for the better and is a vibrant, busy location in central Scotland. Home to the Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel it has a significant industrial heritage and a wide range of facilities and services.

Falkirk Council Bereavement Services is seeking a chargehand to work as part of and manage a small cemetery maintenance team.

You will be involved in the maintenance of the cemeteries, safe excavation of graves using excavation machinery and shoring equipment and closure of graves following an interment. You will be required to help carry coffins, handle ashes caskets, deal with mourners, members of the clergy and other officiants, funeral directors etc, as necessary. You will also deal with visitors to the cemetery and may be required to help locate graves and answer other questions.

The successful applicant must be willing to take charge of a small team of cemetery maintenance operatives and organise daily work operations. He/she also will be expected to liaise with supervisory staff with regard to the organisation of coffin and casket interments, ensure work is completed according to instructions received, and complete all necessary paperwork.

The successful applicant will be expected to: complete all ongoing training with regard to excavation of graves and grounds maintenance, drive vehicles on the public road and in cemeteries, carry out first use vehicle checks, carry out required routine maintenance and complete associated paperwork, He/she will be required to operate tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance operations such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, clearing of leaves and litter etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

A Class B driving licence, and competence to use and operate associated plant, vehicles and equipment are essential. A class C1 OR C1+E would be desirable.

Experience and qualifications in use of excavation machinery in association with opening and closing graves is desirable. Experience and qualifications in the use of hand held power tools is desirable.

Induction and training will ensure that the necessary skills are developed.

Chargehands are expected to work during all weathers and in all conditions. The job may also involve dealing with odorous and/or noxious materials. Suitable personal protective equipment will be provided.
