NURSERY OPERATIVE – FULL-TIME, PART-TIME OR JOB-SHARE

£20,345 - £21,525

Northwich, Cheshire

Delamere Nursery lies close to the Delamere Forest area and grows a wide range of conifer and broad-leaved species, using several nursery techniques. Although the majority of stock is open nursery-produced, almost half our plants spend at least some time in poly and glasshouse facilities.

Joining the Forestry Commission as a Nursery Operative, you will take responsibility for crop husbandry (including pest control) and help with the general running of the nursery. This will include a range of horticultural work, as well as plant packing and dispatch.

You’ll be using agricultural machinery and agro-chemicals in a professional, efficient and safe manner, following instructions from supervisors as well as techniques learnt through training and manufacturers’ guidelines. Looking after our crops in terms of irrigation, plant nutrition and soil health, you will also store and handle pesticides and keep accurate records of their use.

With GCSE Grade C or above in Science, English and Maths, you will be a practical, hands-on person, who can work in an organised way and are comfortable using IT.  You’ll also be happy working in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings in all weathers and be able to demonstrate some knowledge of horticulture, agriculture or plant science.

If you are familiar with forestry practice and have experience of handling, applying and storing pesticides, this would be a bonus. We’ll train you in the use of farm machinery, although ideally you’ll already have a keen interest.

For further information, please email Vernon Stockton at Vernon.stockton@forestryengland.uk or phone him on 07703 211871 .

Interviews will take place on 14th and 15th May 2019.
