An exciting opportunity has arisen for an assistant estate gardener at Stratfield Saye House in North Hampshire. The Estate is home to the Duke of Wellington and has been so since the Estate was gifted to the First Duke in 1818 after his defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo. The gardens consist of formal and informal plantings, lawns, cut flowers, vegetable plots, pleasure grounds etc. There are also water gardens. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the development of these. Whilst the house and gardens are private family home, they are open to the public on specific dates throughout the year.
The post will involve working as directed by the Head Gardener in the established gardens and grounds with a variety of horticultural tasks including soil cultivation, planting, hedge cutting, strimming, mowing, propagation, weeding and providing stock for the house. You will be primarily working with the Head Gardener and 1 other assistant gardener.
We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed person with a real passion for gardening, who works well in a team and on their own. Whilst it is ideal for candidates to have a horticultural qualification, the post is a fantastic opportunity to develop a wide range of gardening skills and experience. Basic plant knowledge and garden machinery competence are essential. Due to the location, it is essential that candidates have a driving license and are willing to commute to work daily.
