Experienced Gardener - Live Out - EC6179
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a gardener to join a small friendly team on a stunning and unique estate in Oxfordshire, on a full-time basis. Applicants should be experienced gardeners with a good understanding of seasonal horticultural practices, good plant knowledge and physical fitness. The successful applicant will work alongside the Head Gardener with the assistance of part-time staff and freelancers.
The garden was designed by Isabel & Julian Bannerman in 1998. It has now become the home of a popular exhibition that attracts over 7,000 visitors every other summer. There are some smaller open days and group visits but for much of the time, the garden is private and quiet. This unique garden has featured in books, newspapers and other publications on numerous occasions, with special reference paid to the small gardening team’s unique method of rose pruning.
Garden duties will include pruning, hedge cutting, planting, propagating, mowing, pool care and other tasks. The position will involve physically strenuous work, so good physical fitness is a pre-requisite for this role. Applicants will need to be confident on ladders and sensible with machinery. Good attention to detail, a common sense approach, strong communication skills and the ability to take instruction are essential. The estate utilises organic principles throughout the garden, as well as the no-dig approach to vegetable production. A significant portion of the role will include rose pruning, so applicants with experience in this area are encouraged to apply.
This position offers plenty of scope for initiative and creativity for the right candidate. Protective equipment will be provided, as will training as necessary.
Working hours are 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday, with occasional weekend work (with overtime paid). A full driving licence is required for this position.
