A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a passionate and enthusiastic hands-on gardener to assist in the continuing maintenance and restoration of a beautiful English landscape garden in Surrey.

Our client is Grade 1 eighteenth century landscape garden of great importance. The garden is set in a wooded valley and covers 158 acres with a serpentine lake, a Chinese bridge, a walled garden, vineyard, ruined abbey, a Turkish tent and a remarkable grotto. The restoration of the garden began in the 1980’s with the aim to restore this “living work of art” and now is enjoyed by the public.

As a hands-on Gardener, you’ll assist in making sure that the garden and surroundings are maintained to a high standard. You’ll become driven, passionate and knowledgeable about the varied plants within the garden and its significant position within history. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. You'll be helping with hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. You’ll support with the planting and maintenance of vegetables, vines, annuals, trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.

As a member of the team you’ll also support garden volunteers/students and help them to make the most of their time here. You’ll be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering questions and passing the time of day. Helping out with gardening workshops, tours and the setting up/take down of events when needed.

The ideal candidate will have good plant knowledge and have a minimum of 3 years practical experience, ideally on a historic garden. A horticultural qualification is beneficial but not essential, and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and chainsaw certificates would be an advantage.  Candidates must be presentable, positive in their approach and comfortable with participating in garden activities, events and interaction with visitors. Candidates should be aware of the physical nature of the position, and of the requirement to work in all weather conditions.  This post also requires the use of garden machinery and may involve some working at heights.
