Job Details

English Heritage cares for over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places. Through these, we bring the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year.

Witley Court is an outstanding property within the English Heritage portfolio and attract around 80,000 visitors each year. It is a major garden site forming part of the West Territory.  The gardens of Witley Court are fine examples of a William Nestfield landscape of the nineteenth century and have been subject to a major restoration  and replanting over the last few years. There is more work to do and working with English Heritage and designers on those projects is a key part of this exciting role.

Against this backdrop we are seeking someone to take on the role of Senior Gardener. Reporting to the Head Gardener and Site Manager, the Senior Gardener is responsible for upkeep and development of Garden areas both formal and informal, the supervision of staff and volunteers, of maintenance of equipment, health and safety and risk assessment. You will be based at Witley Court.

No matter what you do or where you do it, by joining us you’ll be playing a vital role in looking after some of the greatest places in England so that they can be enjoyed today and for generations to come. You’ll find it’s a workplace like no other – taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.

If you have a passion for working in historic gardens, are excited about sharing this with others, and developing others to do the same, then we’d love to hear from you.

Company

Joining us means working somewhere a little different. A career with us as part of our Gardens Team could see you conserve and restore some of the most significant gardens in England, and enable our visitors to enjoy the great cultural heritage of our gardens.

We have dedicated garden teams who maintain and bring to life 11 key gardens across England.  Our gardens illustrate the depth of horticultural history from across the centuries, from the Elizabethan garden at Kenilworth Castle through to the 1930’s gardens at Eltham Place, and vary in size from Down House, the home of Charles Darwin and his garden of international significance, to the magnificent Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s palatial holiday home on the Isle of Wight.

Career paths

A passion for gardens and people is essential as our gardens provide the focal point of many of our visitors seeking to understand both the history as well as our future plans. You could join us within a number of different roles from Trainee or Gardener through to a Head Gardener or Gardens Advisor. Each site will offer a unique starting point from where you can shape a career that aligns with your horticultural skills and personal interests.
