We are looking for a positive and enthusiastic Assistant Gardener to join the team responsible for all aspects of gardening and all other works necessary to maintain the grounds, working with & under the direction of the Head Gardener. The gardens and grounds include formal garden areas, orchards, kitchen garden, yew topiary, expansive lawns, mature trees, a Victorian shrubbery and mixed / herbaceous borders, as well as access drives and parkland.
The successful applicant will be jointly responsible for maintaining the formal garden areas whilst ensuring implementation of new designs, all to a high standard. The ideal person will have an NVQ / RHS qualification and/or extensive proven hands-on experience in large private gardens. You must have a passion for plants and understanding plant care, pruning and maintenance, with good technical gardening knowledge including species-specific pruning techniques, knowledge of seasonal garden management considerations, good plant identification skills and competence with a range of garden tools and machinery, and good physical fitness.
The candidate will have a keen eye for detail, will work to a consistently high standard and will be self-motivated whilst being able to adopt a flexible approach to their work. The ability to undertake basic machinery maintenance would be beneficial but is not essential. A positive attitude and good sense of humour are essential, as the wellbeing of the team and general atmosphere on the estate are important to owners and existing employees.
A full UK driving licence and own transport are required. An affordable house in the village may be possible as part of the package. This is a long term position but would equally suit someone looking to build their knowledge and experience and expecting to move on to a more senior role in a few years’ time.
