The Role:
We are looking to recruit a full-time gardener, to assist the Head Gardener and Garden Team in developing and maintaining the naturalistic gardens at Wadhurst Park. These consist largely of meadow and meadow style plantings, with native hedges and specimen trees, along with fruit and vegetable gardens, and a cold glasshouse ornamental garden. The garden is set within the wider context of the surrounding estate, which is managed for conservation and wildlife, with low-intensity farming and semi-natural habitat restoration. The desire is for the garden to blend into the wider landscape.
We are seeking someone with gardening experience, preferably in a similar estate or large garden, to work within our team. Someone with confidence and knowledge in a broad range of horticultural techniques, who can demonstrate an interest in a naturalistic gardening style and organic principles. Someone with enthusiasm, attention to detail and a sense of enquiry.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- Maintain and develop a range of garden areas to a high standard, using specialist horticultural skills
- Manage your workload, plan and prioritise effectively and use your initiative to facilitate the team in achieving our goals
- Supervise and guide garden trainees, students and casual staff
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of Health and Safety practices and legislation
Knowledge, experience, qualifications and skills:
- RHS Level 2 Diploma or similar
- Demonstrate a wide range of horticultural skills and knowledge
- A knowledge of Organic practices is desirable
- An understanding of naturalistic planting and gardening principles
- Demonstrate good plant knowledge, including plant identification and plant management skills
- Practical knowledge and maintenance of machinery and equipment used in horticulture
- Good communication skills
- Computer literate
- Full, clean driving licence
- Physically fit and able to undertake all garden related duties
- A commitment to Equal Opportunities
- A commitment to personal and professional development
