Job Details

If you want a career in Gardening, we can offer you some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the UK to work in as well as one of the largest plant collections in Europe.

Due to the current gardener moving on to be a Head Gardener we are are looking for a new portfolio gardener based primarily at Little Moreton Hall for 4 days a week, and 1 day at Hare Hill garden, this will be flexible with more days at Hare Hill during winter.

What it's like to work here

Little Moreton Hall is part of the Cheshire & Wirral properties portfolio. We manage historic property, gardens and multiple areas of countryside within Cheshire and Wirral. Little Moreton Hall near Congleton is a 500 year old Tudor moated manor house which sits within a 2 acre estate. The formal garden within the moat contains a lawned area, knot garden surrounded by yew hedging, boarders and beds. A new orchard area is due to be developed adjacent to the moat and the front lawn and car park make up the rest the estate. The property tells a Tudor story which is echoed within the current planting scheme and has around 80k visitors each year visiting between February and December with opening days varying from 7 days a week to just weekends.

Hare Hill near Alderley Edge is a very different garden. At its heart sits the white walled garden, this is surrounded by woodland which includes a pond and numerous varieties of rhododendron, holly and azalea. The garden has around 35k visitors a year and is constantly being developed in line with the original owner’s vision with a strong connection to the plantsman and 20th century designer James Russell there are several exciting projects being delivered in the next few years.

What you'll be doing

As the Little Moreton Hall gardener you will have full responsibility for maintaining the garden and grounds. Because we’re a small team we will also need your help with other aspects of the property such as maintaining and improving visitor experience, interpretation, event planning and delivery and developing our daily programming of activities plus anything else where we need an extra pair of hands. You will also be a part of the Duty Manager team covering weekends at the Hall. We’re also looking for someone with enthusiasm and ideas about how we can bring the garden to life and engage with our visitors.

At Hare Hill you’ll be working with other National Trust gardeners and volunteers on larger project work. You’ll also need to be flexible in terms of planning to work at either location which will vary depending upon the time of year.

This role will give the successful person a variety of work and challenges. It’s a fantastic opportunity to manage a small garden yourself but also get involved in lots of different activities and projects at two very different properties within the portfolio.

Who we're looking for

To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the below:

  • Trained as a professional gardener/horticulturalist with a good level of practical experience.
  • RHS Level 2 or equivalent.
  • Have proven practical gardening/horticulture experience, as well as a strong knowledge of plants
  • Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
  • Competence with machinery/equipment use and maintenance; including tractors, chainsaws, and pedestrian mowers with accreditation as required for Health and Safety compliance.

Company

There's no other organisation like the National Trust. No other organisation that brings such an amazing variety of places and spaces to life.

We are a charity founded in 1895 by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Canon Hardwicke Rawnsley, three people who saw the importance of our nation’s heritage and open spaces, and wanted to protect them for everyone to enjoy. More than a century after we were founded, our values are still at the heart of everything we do. And we do a lot more than you might think.

We welcome some 22.5 million visitors, from all ages and backgrounds, every year. We care for historic houses, gardens, mills, forests, castles, miles of coastline, islands, holiday cottages, pubs and inns, whole villages and even a goldmine. We also run a huge retail chain, a multi-million pound food and beverage business and much, much more. And we do all of this so that everyone can enjoy and make the most of the green spaces and beautiful places that England, Wales and Northern Ireland has to offer.

The National Trust is described by its employee gardeners as “dynamic, supportive, inquisitive and fun”, where its beautiful places “lift your spirits naturally” and “somewhere you can expand new skills”. The organisation is currently recruiting for a number of gardening roles.
