An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Undergardener to work alongside the Head Gardener maintaining a beautiful and innovative 35-acre private estate near Rye, East Sussex.

The stunning garden is made up of several different character areas consisting of a very large formal English modern style garden with extensive perennial plantings, rose garden, fern garden, Italian garden, exotic beds, other shrub and perennial beds.  There is a young orchard, a large vegetable garden as well as a small new tree plantation, two large greenhouses, rose and clematis 'cloister' type walk, formal hedging and topiary and several formal lawn areas. The garden extends to around five acres in all.

The owners are garden enthusiasts and have been developing the gardens since they bought the property nearly 5 years ago and continue to do so. The Undergardener will work closely with the Head Gardener on any developments and will be willing to learn and develop their skills to later work on their own initiative. He / She will be responsible for the general maintenance of the garden such as the hedge cutting, lawn mowing, strimming, clearing leaves, weeding and support in other areas such as feeding and caring for the chicken and peacocks.

The ideal candidate will have good knowledge of plants, garden practices and the use of garden machinery. He / She will have proven general horticultural skills, work to a high standard and ideally is a keen knowledgeable plants person. Experience in vegetable and fruit production and propagation work would be an advantage.

The successful candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification and have proven experience working in a large private garden. Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) though desirable is not essential, however spray certificates (PA1/PA6) would be an advantage.  You must be somebody who is organised, physically fit and able to work in a small team. Someone who is a fast learner, proactive and capable of working unsupervised generally once started off to maintain the garden's annual calendar and own daily work schedules effectively. References will be required for the successful candidate prior to starting work.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven Undergardener with a real passion for horticulture looking for a long term and rewarding role on a beautiful estate.
