Gardens Supervisor, Wrest Park

Salary circa £20,500-21,500 depending on experience. 36hrs per week

English Heritage cares for over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places. Through these, we bring the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year. No matter what they do and where they do it, our people play their part in protecting and presenting some of the greatest places in England for the benefit and enjoyment of our visitors.

Wrest Park`s gardens are brimming with historic character, exciting gardening opportunities and offer a remarkable setting in which to take the next step in your career. Our gardens are unique, with a range of surviving garden layouts dating back to the 17th century.  English Heritage have undertaken an extensive programme of revitalisation, and have already restored key formal areas including the French and Italian parterres, rose garden, pear orchard and evergreen garden. Work will continue well into the future in the woodland gardens where rides and serpentine paths are being replanted and remodelled to restore the intimate nature of the garden compartments throughout the woodland. The whole garden contains numerous statues, lakes and other garden features.

As Gardens Supervisor, you will play a vital role in developing the grounds at Wrest Park.  You will find imaginative ways of bringing to life the stories that they tell, helping visitors of all ages to make new discoveries.  Supervising and leading an enthusiastic, dedicated team of gardeners and volunteers, you will work closely with our Head Gardener to ensure the gardens and landscape is shown off to the highest standards of presentation. You will provide efficient, high-quality, skilled maintenance for our gardens, managing all day to day aspects of the Upper Garden’s presentation and cyclic maintenance.  You will also work closely with the Great Garden and Trainee Manager to support and guide trainees on site as they work through the Historic and Botanic Gardens Training Programme.

We are looking for someone with a creative eye, high-quality garden experience, great plant knowledge and horticultural skills and a talent for team supervision.  You will know how to ensure visitors enjoy their day out - from sharing your gardening knowledge, to ensuring their health and safety.

No matter what you do or where you do it, by joining us you’ll be playing a vital role in looking after some of the greatest places in England so that they can be enjoyed today and for generations to come. You’ll find it’s a workplace like no other – taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.

If you have a passion for working in historic gardens, are excited about sharing this with others, and developing others to do the same, then we’d love to hear from you.
