Kitchen Garden Keeper
Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. Its aim is to help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.
This is your chance to play a key role in the upkeep and further development of Hampton Court Palace’s popular and much-loved Kitchen Garden, which opened in 2014. In this recreation of a Georgian kitchen garden, we grow a wide range of fruit, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers, including many unusual historical varieties.
We are looking for an experienced, highly skilled horticulturist to take on the day-to-day management of the Kitchen Garden. Applicants will have at least three years’ experience of fruit, vegetable and herb cultivation. A positive approach to interpreting the garden to a wide range of visitors is essential, as is the ability to lead a team of gardeners, volunteers and occasional school groups in maintaining the garden.
We expect you to have a Level 3 horticultural qualification that supports your horticultural expertise, plus experience of teaching and demonstrating gardening skills to others, a knowledge of organic growing methods, propagation skills and experience of maintaining accurate planting records. You will also need to demonstrate experience of managing a team, and have a good general knowledge of horticulture and horticultural equipment and machinery. A full clean driving licence is essential, as are good IT skills. An interest in Garden history would be an advantage.
Historic Royal Palaces is an equal opportunities employer and truly values a diverse workforce. Applications are welcome from candidates regardless of their background.
