A rare opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener/ Grounds Manager to play a leading role in the development, maintenance and management of an established garden and associated staff.  As part of the management team, the role also encompasses aspects of the wider estate grounds.  This impressive and unique country destination provides multiple service offerings to valued guests, each of whom visit the site to indulge in fine food, high-end accommodation and relaxation at the hand of true professionals in their respective field.  This is a ‘land to table’ operation and as such, applicants with an interest in food production are encouraged to apply.

As the successful candidate, you will work under the direction of the General Manager and the business/estate owner to oversee all outdoor areas of the estate.  You primarily will be responsible for the garden team, farm workers, volunteers, contractors and the direction of consultants.

On a horticultural front, the Garden and Grounds Manager will be responsible for border maintenance, plant propagation, growing on and planting a wide range of plants, pruning (including fruit trees), kitchen garden production (in association with the Head Kitchen Gardener), woodland and meadow maintenance and conservation.  A private garden encompasses 4-5 acres, with and additional 4-5 acres in meadows to be managed.  The role will require the care of poultry and sheep alongside a Farm Manager, and assistance with other duties that may be necessary to ensure the smooth running of the estate. Applicants should be willing and able to deliver informative talks about the gardens and the overall business to guests and other members of the public where necessary.

The successful applicant will lead and contribute to major projects including garden design and development, farm development, and will oversee some of the ongoing projects whilst ensuring the garden maintenance team continue to work to a high standard.  As the Garden and Grounds Manager, you will also be required to ensure systems are in place to safeguard the smooth running of departments and that each department is managed cost effectively and is profitable.

The successful applicant will work as part of a team in a hands-on capacity as well as from a managerial perspective.  You will be required to demonstrate and train staff in the use of a range of garden machinery; tractors, quad bikes, mowers, strimmers, blowers, hedge cutters etc. and oversee the associated servicing and maintenance schedules.

Applicants must have an understanding of environmentally sensitive practices, organic growing, pest and disease management (including pesticide usage in certain areas).  The estate play host to ducks and hens, so applicants with knowledge of poultry management are encouraged to apply.  Excellent communication skills, a passion for horticulture and the outdoors, attention to detail and self-motivation are essential qualities necessary for this role.

Candidates for this position should have a relevant academic horticultural qualification and a good understanding of Health and Safety Regulations, as well as demonstrable experience of gardening at Head or Senior level.  Candidates must be physically fit and capable of heavy lifting and may be from a private estates and/or commercial background.  Spray certificates (PA1/PA6) and certification of chainsaw competence are desirable.  A full UK driving licence is essential.

This position is structured to a 40-hour week; 08:00 – 16:30 over 5-days to include some weekend work on a rota basis.  Holiday entitlement is 28 days paid holiday (including Bank Holidays), plus your birthday off in addition to the above.
