An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and experienced skilled gardener to maintain and further develop the gardens on a beautiful family run Historic Estate.

The Estate is located on the Moray Coast, a commutable distance from Inverness and is set in 22 acres of stunning and established parkland and woodland with a lake and walled garden. The 1.5 acres of walled garden contains an orchard, glasshouse and 2 large polytunnels, ornamental parterres with grasses and a herb garden, large herbaceous borders with lupins and ornamental poppies, cut flowers, raised beds, lawn and kitchen garden. The herb and kitchen garden supply the café and renowned fine dining restaurant with fruit, vegetables and herbs throughout the year.

Our client is looking for a skilled gardener to develop and maintain the gardens to a high horticultural standard and with minimal supervision. A key responsibility will be growing fresh produce in the kitchen garden and glasshouse/polytunnels. Therefore, a working knowledge of plant propagation is required as the successful candidate will assist in the growing of thousands of seedlings for micro herbs and veg production.  He / She will also be responsible for the year-round garden maintenance, lawncare and management, development and care of the herbaceous and shrub borders, the cut flowerbeds and fruit trees.

The ideal candidate will hold an academic horticultural qualification (preferably at Level 3) and have experience working on private estates. They will have excellent horticultural knowledge and are confident in plant identification, plant husbandry and specialist knowledge such as pest and disease control. Previous experience in borders and garden design implementation would be an advantage and he / she will have experience in the use and maintenance of garden machinery. PA1/PA6 and chainsaw licence are desirable but not essential.

The role reports to the owners and will work alongside other members of both part time gardening staff and chefs, therefore, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team is important. He / She will have a flexible approach to work and be willing to help out on the wider estate where necessary. Given the rural location of the estate, a driving licence and vehicle are essential. The successful candidate should be prepared to work outside in all weathers, be physically fit and have a vision for maintaining and enhancing the garden as required. Working hours are weekdays 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a passionate skilled gardener who is looking for a long term and rewarding role on a beautiful estate. Someone to really take ownership of the gardens, and work closely with the owners and the wider team.
