An excellent opportunity for a Skilled Estate Gardener to join an established and prestigious estate nestled in the heart of Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 120-acre gardens are Grade 2 listed and incorporate a large productive walled kitchen garden, orchard, substantial state of the art glasshouses, formal lawns, extensive herbaceous borders, parkland, lakes and woodland. The garden has a valuable Rhododendron collection and diverse arboretum.

We are looking for a skilled gardener to join a team of experienced gardeners, under the direction of the Head Gardener and Deputy Head Gardener. The main areas of responsibility will be the parkland lawn and arboretum, lakes, formal hedges, shrub borders and woodland across the estate. The skilled gardener will also provide support with formal lawn mowing and there will be plenty of opportunity to also be involved across all aspects of the grounds and gardens, including nursery work, rose cultivation, herbaceous borders and vegetable production.

Applicants should have a strong practical gardening knowledge with a minimum 3 years of experience, together with a passion for horticulture, energy, enthusiasm and attention to detail. Applicants should be physically fit, have a strong work ethic and be proficient in carrying out a range of horticultural tasks. It is essential that the applicant has a full UK driving license and experience with driving tractors with trailers, operating ride-on mowers and using a range of garden power tools, such as brushcutters and blowers. Experience with formal hedge cutting and management of woody plants is also required.  Horticultural qualifications, PA1, PA6 spray certificates and chainsaw tickets are desirable, but are not essential.

The position would be ideal for a driven horticulturalist, looking to broaden their experience and have the opportunity to be exposed to a wide range of horticultural practices, disciplines, training and techniques. The estate is committed to developing staff and the successful applicant will look forward to continual support and career development, training, pension, paid overtime and a bonus scheme.

Salary £18000 pa with accommodation provided, 37.5 hours per week and 20 days of annual leave, exclusive of bank holidays. The applicant must be willing to occasionally work outside formal hours to facilitate additional support for the estate during busy periods.
