An exciting role has become available for a skilled and experienced Horticulture Nursery Worker to join our Merrist Wood Management team within the Guildford College Group.

This is a full-time position based at our Merrist Wood campus on a permanent basis. The salary offered is £18,687 - £21,003 per annum.

Main Purpose of the Role

  • Maintain, develop and enhance a wide range of Horticultural resources across the college group, especially the Merrist Wood plant Nursery
  • Ensure the smooth day to day running of the plant nursery including watering plants, setting up classrooms for lessons, supporting tutors, collecting plant material, controlling pests and diseases, plant propagation and plant maintenance
  • Ordering plants, materials, tools and equipment, ensuring sufficient stock is maintained for curriculum purposes
  • To supervise and co-ordinate students on work experience ensuring development of industry standard safety practice, skills and attributes
  • To support the wider estates team in developing the Merrist Wood and Group Estates

Principal Accountabilities

  • Ensure and promote the correct use and operation of machinery and equipment; undertake the application of a wide range of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers, adhere to the recommended manufactures guidelines and application rates in order to ensure that all defined areas are maintained to the required standards
  • Set up classrooms at the start of each lesson with the necessary tools, equipment and materials and support the tutor in clearing up at the end of the day
  • Collect plant material for plant identification tests
  • Maintain the stock of plants and seeds for both curriculum use and the for the wider campus, to include watering, feeding, pricking out seedlings, potting on plants, pest and disease control
  • Maintain the stock ground and wider campus including the use of mowers, strimmers, rotavators, sprayers and tractors
  • Yearly planting plans and bedding designs

Personal Specification

  • Significant, recent relevant occupational experience within the horticulture industry
  • Management and maintenance in a horticulture environment
  • Proven experience in the use of a wide range of specialist equipment and machinery
  • Proven understanding of the key principles of Gardening/Ground Maintenance and how they are applied.
  • Desirable: Experience of nursery work including glasshouse work and stock ground work
  • Desirable: Experience of plant propagation
  • Desirable: Experience of pest and disease control

Qualifications

  • Level 3 or above relevant vocational qualification
  • PA1 and PA6 Safe Use of Pesticides or a willingness to gain within 3 months
  • Desirable: Trailer certification
  • Desirable: Tractor Driving Certification
  • Desirable: Use of mowers and strimmers certification
