Experienced Gardener

Barakura English Garden are looking for an experienced gardener to expand our garden team.

Barakura Garden is located in the Tateshina region of Nagano Prefecture in central Japan. Designed by John Brooks MBE, owned by the Yamada family and opened in 1990, it is the first English style garden in Japan. Miss Kay Yamada has exhibited at Chelsea Flower Show three times in the Show Garden category. Throughout the year guest horticulturists, such as Stephen Anderton, Tracy Wilson MBE, and Michael Perry lecture at the garden’s seminars and events.

Overview of Position

The position requires the applicant to be experienced in pruning roses and other shrubs, able to make containers and hanging baskets to a high standard, and be experienced at planting and replanting borders, and be able to undertake lawn maintenance. They will work under our British head gardener and should be able to work as part of a team or independently.

The position will be either a short term (3 months) from April to June, or a longer term (8 months) from April to November.

The applicant should have at least ten years hands-on experience in horticulture. Having worked at a National Trust garden or similar private garden open to the public would be desirable.

Remuneration:

  • Salary: up to £1200 monthly
  • Airfare, accommodation, transportation, and some meals provided.

A Working Visa will be required.

A long-term placement could be negotiated.
