Purpose of the Job

This highly varied, practical and physical role will support the Westonbirt Tree Team in maintaining the living collection and historical landscape to the highest standards possible befitting The National Arboretum.

Key Work Areas

General

Reporting to the Collection Manager the successful candidate shall:

Work effectively as part of a small team, responding quickly to requests and be flexible enough to carry out a range of tasks across the site, including those outside the department.

Arboricultural Operations


Maintain the tree collection and historic grounds in line with arboretum objectives, management plans and policies.


Carry out arboricultural operations, felling, pruning, targeted remedial cycle and seasonal work programmes including sward management, annual planting programme and subsequent plant establishment checks. 

After any required training, utilize a range of equipment and vehicles to carry out a range of essential tasks, including chainsaws, MEWP, woodchipper, stumpgrinder, tractors.

Ongoing plant health checks and safety observations.

Ensuring accurate records are kept and close liaison with Database and Mapping Officer.


Robust implementation of national and local bio-security standards across all aspects of arboretum activity.

Health and Safety Management


Ensure compliance with health and safety standards, adhering to operational guidance, regulations, legislation and industry best practice.

Ensure a wide range of operational Risk Assessments are completed and reviewed regularly, and that Site Specific Risk Assessments are completed for high risk activities.

Manage risk to public by erecting & maintaining barriers/signage around safety exclusion areas.

Other duties

Maintain vehicles and machinery to ensure their safe operation.

Carry out work as required in connection with the setting up & running of annual arboretum events programme, such as The Arb Show, Forest Live Music and Enchanted Christmas, also during peak times such as Autumn when staff may be required to assist visitor services in their roles.

Customer Service

Contribute to the overall service levels of this busy visitor attraction; providing assistance to staff, volunteers and customers when required.

Promote a positive image at all times, dealing with visitors in a helpful way to enhance their experience and perception of the Arboretum.
