An exceptional opportunity has arisen for the role of Head Gardener at one of Scotland’s most prestigious privately-owned castles. Set within an extensive highland estate, the core estate of the grounds and gardens extends to 50 acres.
Situated just 45 minutes’ drive north of Inverness, this is an opportunity for an experienced Head Gardener to be a part of a first-class garden estate. Including drives, a ‘D’ shaped walled garden along with substantial and varied tree numbers, the estate also consists of an Italian Garden, small greenhouses and polytunnels. Seven 5-star self-catering holiday cottages sit within the grounds, with guests and clients regularly using and enjoying the surrounding gardens and grounds.
The owners’ continued development and regeneration of the estate means a substantial amount of plants, shrubs and trees are regularly purchased meaning planting and soil management are key skills expected.
Applicants must be passionate, driven and multi-skilled senior gardeners with demonstrable staff and large estate management experience along with excellent attention to detail. The role involves managing an existing team consisting of 2 full-time gardeners with the addition of one part-time gardener in the high season.
A resilient nature and the ability to adapt to the ever-changing Scottish weather is required, and would suit a candidate with previous experience of this climate. However, an individual with solution-based working practices will relish the opportunity to be involved in this dynamic and rarely available placement.
Historic yet forward looking, organic practices are in place across the entire estate and as part of the on-going development, the Head Gardener will work closely with the Estate Manager in terms of budget planning and control. The ability to communicate well is a prerequisite of the post as regular liaison and updates, both with the Estate Manager and the client, is expected. IT skills to a reasonable level are also expected in order to facilitate on-going communication and planning.
Candidates should be able to supply a detailed and informative portfolio demonstrating past roles, gardens and management of similar projects detailed in this job brief. Accommodation consists of a newly renovated 2 bed semi-detached house situated 2 miles from the core estate with an opportunity for a garden if desired. Pets are welcome.
