Gardener/Propagation Manager

Chelsea Physic Garden has been growing, conserving and connecting people with plants since 1673 – we’re the second oldest Botanic Garden in the UK and the oldest in London.  We have four acres of intensively cultivated land in the heart of Chelsea and an incredibly diverse collection of plants which thrive in our riverside microclimate.

Owing to an internal promotion, we are looking for a highly skilled and motivated Gardener/Propagation Manager to the join the team.  As we are a small team and all our roles have many strands we need team players who are flexible, can think on their feet and who like to work hard.

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and developing one area of the Garden, one or two glasshouses and also working throughout the wider Garden on team tasks.  One day could be mulching, another turfing or weeding, staking, edging, blowing – whatever it takes to keep this botanic garden at our very high standard of horticulture and presentation.

The propagation aspect of the role takes responsibility for the day-to-day management of the annual and ongoing propagation programme.  From seeds and cuttings you will produce up to 12,000 quality plants a year from a small space.  You will need to be very organised, efficient and resourceful.

The role will be split approximately 60% gardening and 40% Propagation Management.

The successful candidate will be joining a friendly, knowledgeable and hard-working team and will gain experience of a wide range of ethno botanic, unusual, tropical and rare plants.  Ideally, you will have a level 2 or 3 horticultural qualification and have gained in-depth experience within an historic or botanic garden.

This is a full-time role, working with a team of 4 gardeners, 2 trainees and up to 30 volunteers.

Salary: £22,500-£23,600
