An ideal opportunity to take ownership as the Sole gardener of a lovely mixed garden situated in the beautiful lowlands of South West Scotland. This garden is part of the Scottish Gardens Scheme, however the client has decided not to open this coming year, by way of allowing the successful candidate to bed in and get to grips with the estate.

Comprised of a 2-acre walled garden, which encompasses a kitchen garden, the estate is bordered by a further 2 acres of mature woodland garden leading to a small lake.

A suitably qualified and knowledgeable plants person is required as this is a densely planted, sheltered garden with herbaceous borders as its signature.

The role will involve the management of beds, borders and flowers, and associated weeding/mulching as necessary. The client is looking for a knowledgeable horticulturist capable of providing expert advice on species-specific plant management throughout the property.

The successful applicant will receive some assistance with general maintenance duties from a current part-time employee allowing time for the Sole Gardener to concentrate on the development and upkeep of the more formal aspects of the garden. A qualified tree surgeon is also used when necessary.

Excellent communication and an ability to project manage the garden independently are vital as the client will be away for substantial parts of the year. Applicants must be physically fit with a positive attitude and enthusiasm in their work. Previous experience of similar private garden estate management is required as is a progressive outlook in the continuing story of the garden.

The role comes with other responsibilities. These are notably, caretaking the main house in coordination with a live-out housekeeper and the factor, ensuring it has sufficient logs for fires, along with looking after two terrier dogs in the owner’s absence. The applicant needs to be capable of working unsupervised whilst providing results. A full clean UK driving licence is required as the candidate is required to assist with lifts to the local train station.

SALARY: £25,000 + 2 bedroom lodge separate from property including utility bills and council tax
