Garden Project Leader

A full-time, permanent post. Salary c.£25,000 per annum dependent on experience.

We have 40 acres of woodland gardens surrounding the picturesque ruin of Armadale Castle on the Sleat peninsula, Isle of Skye. The gardens date back to the 1600s and host many rare plants and shrubs. A key feature are the specimen trees towering above the ruins of the Castle. Then there are landscape ponds, carpets of bluebells in Spring, colourful herbaceous borders, woodland walks and stunning scenery. Beyond the formal and woodland gardens, the wider estate supports sporting activities, wildlife and nature conservation (there are two SSSI sites on the estate with Sea and Golden eagle nesting sites). www.armadalecastle.com

This is an exciting time to join our team with this new post signalling our commitment to the future of the gardens. With c45,000 visitors per year the gardens play an important role in the overall success of the Trust. Rarely does there come an opportunity to play a leading role in the management and development of such a historically significant garden. The scale and setting of the gardens provide opportunities to develop planting schemes, create new areas, support nature conservation and host art installations. We are looking for a real horticultural champion to nurture a very special place.

Applicants will need a recognised horticultural qualification (ideally level 3 or above), with excellent technical knowledge plus extensive hands-on gardening experience, preferably in the Scottish Highlands. PA1 and PA6 qualifications are an essential, with CS30/31 a desirable. You must be able to effectively plan your time and that of other members of the team. You must be willing to get involved in all aspects of the garden and estate work as needed. Good physical fitness is required. The ideal candidate will be able to share their passion for the gardens with colleagues and visitors. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled gardener to showcase their talents in a genuinely stunning garden.

We provide staff uniforms, a generous staff discount in our café and shops, and a personalised training programme to help you achieve your potential.
