Senior Gardener – near Northampton

A Senior Gardener is sought by a large privately owned estate near Northampton which is open to the public throughout the summer months.

The formal and ‘wild’ gardens, that are adjacent to the main house, extend to some 13 acres and have been developed over the course of the last century by the owners in association with several distinguished landscape designers.  The gardens comprise a series of “rooms” separated by mature hedges and walls.  They enclose large herbaceous borders, formal ponds, statuary and a fine collection of mature trees and shrubs.  A wilder garden is set on the banks of a meandering stream.

The Senior Gardener will work under the instruction of the Head Gardener and be supported by 2 further members of the gardening team to ensure that the gardens are managed and presented to an extremely high standard.

Applications are invited from either current estate Senior Gardeners or experienced Gardeners seeking career progression.  He/she will need to be self-motivated with an eye for detail and a desire to achieve high standards, committed, trustworthy and possess good supervisory and communication skills.  This is very much a hands-on position that requires leadership skills.

A minimum RHS Level 2 horticulture qualification, HND, OND, City and Guilds is essential and a PA1/PA6 chemical spray certificate desirable. At least three years relevant experience together with comprehensive plant knowledge and familiarity with most gardening practices, including the use of machinery e.g. mowers and strimmers. Clear understanding of relevant Health and Safety legislation is required.

Although the position is predominantly based on a 39 hour working week, flexibility is required to cover weekends and Bank Holidays as required.

This position offers an excellent opportunity to work within the celebrated gardens of a fabulous historic estate.

Salary : £21K depending on experience

Accommodation : this position can either be offered as a live-out role (for local applicants) or accommodation can be offered as part of a negotiable package.
