Our client is offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced gardener to gain experience of working in an historic Cambridge college. You’ll be part of the creation of new gardens to compliment the building of a new Library and Auditorium which will be completed in 2020, as well as further development of varied gardens in Cripps Court, Old Court and the main gardens.

Contract Type: Fixed Term for 3 years, full-time 
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week 
Salary: £19,426 per annum (pay award pending from 1 August 2018)

The Role

The new Gardener will work as part of a team who will be delivering some great new developments. These include the design, planting and development of the courts around the new Library and Auditorium due to be built in the next couple of years.

There are also fantastic opportunities of continued development of the existing gardens for all round year interest. You’ll help to deliver the maintenance and continued horticultural development of the garden, providing a sense of beauty and tranquillity for the Fellows, students, staff, guests and visitors.

About the Gardens

The gardens are made up of a number of varied spaces, there is Old Court with its large formal lawn, diverse planting within the surrounding borders and the walls of the buildings shrouded in Parthenocissus. The lower garden comprises of a number of mixed borders some with many roses others more naturalistic such as near to the pond, which is rich in wildlife and birds. Other areas of the gardens are the Master’s Garden, Fellows’ Garden, Cripps Court, Ann’s Court and also the gardens around the nearby student hostels, all these areas having interest and potential for further development. The gardens offer tranquil and relaxing spaces which are enjoyed by students, staff, Fellows, conference guests and visitors alike.

The gardens team have wide ranging horticultural experience and a real desire to develop the gardens. Satisfying hard work, involvement, good humour and fun all go hand in hand to make the college a fulfilling place to work.

The Ideal Candidate

With proven experience of developing and maintaining gardens to a high standard, you will have a wide range of plant knowledge, and understand what makes plants succeed and what has to happen to achieve this. A recognised horticultural qualification is essential.

To be successful in this role, you will have a passion for horticulture, and strong problem solving skills, along with a ‘can do’ attitude. You will be conscientious, hardworking and reliable, a team player, with a good sense of humour and the ability and desire to support others in the team.
