We are seeking a manager with energy, ambition and new ideas to oversee the work of the operational grounds maintenance teams. Based at the, Green Flag winning, Whiteknights campus this is an opportunity for a proactive individual with team leadership experience to work within a parkland environment and other satellite sites within Reading. The post will ensure that standards of workmanship are maintained, that teams achieve agreed monthly performance targets, that resource is allocated effectively to meet workload demands and that robust health & safety arrangements are in place and implemented.

The grounds maintenance service at the University of Reading is delivered through an in-house maintenance team with support from specialist contractors. The Harris Garden, a former botanic garden, is maintained with the help of volunteers. The successful candidate will have broad experience and knowledge of grounds management, customer service, an excellent working knowledge of health and safety and will be able to manage operational staff on a daily basis. Experience of working in a similar environment or organisation would be advantageous.

You will have:

  • A horticultural qualification, Minimum level 3 (see job description)
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills at all levels
  • Good writing skills able to write concise technical reports and instructions  
  • Comprehensive grounds maintenance experience
  • Commitment to achieving department goals and SLA’s
  • Self-reliant and able to work alone using own initiative
  • Good knowledge of horticulture, sport and current grounds maintenance techniques
  • An excellent working knowledge of health & safety requirements with a recognised qualification and the willingness to obtain Nebosh General Certificate if required
  • A valid UK driving Licence
