A position has arisen for a Senior Gardener, reporting directly to the Head Gardener, at The Bishop’s Palace. The Bishop’s Palace is 14 acres in size and contains picturesque, gardenesque, English garden style and contemporary gardens. This is a dynamic garden that embraces new projects. We are proud of our high horticultural standards and our RHS partner garden status. Visitor numbers reached 117,000 in 2017 and our annual English Country Garden Festival held in June continues to grow in popularity and is one of our largest events of the year.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Working with the team to maintain the gardens to the highest possible standard
  • Helping to manage the garden staff and volunteers
  • Assisting with the development of new projects 
  • Take a key role in managing the Community Garden, greenhouse and plant sales
  • Take part in public events such as garden tours, Christmas decorating of the Palace, and the annual Garden Festival
  • Deputising in the absence of the Head Gardener
  • Acting as Duty Manager as required (several weekend days per year)

We are looking for:

  • NVQ level 1-2 or RHS levels 1-2 or HND in Horticulture or similar
  • Practical experience of gardening in a similar setting
  • Good knowledge of plants and kitchen gardening
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements
  • Excellent customer service
  • A good communicator with some experience of working with volunteers
  • Pride in work

This is an active and physical job that will involve tasks including weeding, pruning, movement of compost/soil, hard and soft landscaping, greenhouse and nursery work, community garden tasks, planting and some mowing and strimming.
