A wonderful opportunity has arisen for a skilled estate gardener to take ownership of a beautiful private garden in Chinnor, Oxfordshire.  The position would suit a qualified, experienced and well-rounded horticulturist with good physical fitness and a willingness to undertake some general estate duties; inside the house, organisation of repairs and maintenance, in addition to overall management of the garden.

The three acre formal garden is set within 140 acres of land, 80 acres of which are rented out for agricultural purposes.  The garden comprises of formal lawns and hedges, a box parterre, mixed beds and borders, roses, water features, an orchard, tennis court, a small greenhouse and a wild flower area in the making. There are several paddocks, mown paths, many hedges as well as gates and fences and buildings to maintain.    An indoor pool will require basic maintenance, as will 10 acres of established woodland.  A newly planted woodland will also require basic weed control.

Two horses, two sheep, two dogs and four hens are the responsibility of the groom.   The new recruit will carry out their basic care on the groom’s two days off per week and during their holidays.  The successful applicant’s days off will therefore be Sunday and Monday.  Bees may be kept on site in the future.  All garden machinery is provided including a Kubota tractor and trailer, ride-on mower, pedestrian mower, hedge cutters, strimmers etc. so applicants must be well-versed in the operation and basic maintenance of such equipment.

Applicants should hold an academic horticultural qualification and have extensive hands-on experience, including in the operation of chainsaws and spray equipment.  Pest control is ongoing so applicants must not be averse to the control of mice, rats, magpies, foxes, pigeons and squirrels in principle.  Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have their own transport as the estate is in a rural location and occasional driving duties may be required.  An estate vehicle (Land Rover Discovery) is provided for work purposes and for station and airport runs.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled and experienced estate gardener to live and work on a beautiful private property in Oxfordshire.  The estate owners are passionate about their garden and are genuinely enthusiastic about the prospect of sharing their garden with a knowledgeable and experienced plants person.

A small one bedroom flat, adjacent to the main house is provided on site; suitable for a single person or couple, though unsuitable for children.  One dog is welcome though cats are not due to the abundant bird population on site.  A generous salary is offered in addition to the accommodation and holidays.  Rent, Council Tax, electricity, water, gas and sewage treatment are all paid for by the client.
