Chelsea Physic Garden seeks a highly skilled and motivated Gardener/Volunteer Supervisor. The ideal candidate will have a level 2 horticultural qualification and have gained good experience within an historic or botanic garden.
You will be assisting in the maintenance of an intensively cultivated botanical garden, working in all parts and on all aspects of the Garden’s horticultural work with other members of staff, trainees, interns and volunteers. You will have a specific area within the Garden that is your assigned responsibility to maintain and develop. Everyone on the horticultural team is expected to get involved in all aspects of the Garden’s care and should enjoy turning their hand to a wide range of tasks.
The volunteer supervisory aspect of the role includes recruiting and inducting horticultural volunteers and interns to ensure all Garden and specialist horticultural volunteer posts are filled, as required by the Head Gardener, year-round. Additionally, the role encompasses administering all Garden and specialist volunteer and intern posts, including but not limited to: processing travel claims, provision of PPE and carrying out review interviews. Administrative support will be provided for this aspect of the role. The volunteer supervision will account for 15 – 20% of the role’s allocated time.
Experience of working with volunteers would be desirable but excellent interpersonal and people management skills from a different environment would also be suitable.
The successful candidate will be joining a friendly, knowledgeable and hard-working team and will gain experience of a wide range of ethno-botanic, unusual, tropical and rare plants.
This is a full-time role, working with a team of 3 gardeners, 2 trainees and a team of volunteers.
