A private garden in East Lothian is looking for a Head Gardener to take care of the 4 acre walled garden and extending grounds. The garden is open twice a year as part of Scotland’s Garden Scheme and private group visits take place throughout the year.
An exciting gardening opportunity requiring an enthusiastic Head Gardener with a wealth of experience and knowledge, working with the owner and any additional staff to manage, maintain and progress the many varied areas of interest included in the walled garden; arboretum, fruit & vegetables, roses, fruit trees and lawns.
The glasshouse holds prominent position within the walled garden, and allow a wide variety of plants to be cultivated which requires a good knowledge of propagation, general indoor plant cultivation and pest control, so knowledge in this area is essential.
Manage, maintain and develop the garden
Maintenance and development of a large greenhouse
Cultivation of fruit and vegetables
Management of nursery area for propagation and bringing on plants for the garden and charity garden open days (not a commercial garden)
Organising own work schedule and that of any support staff
Initiating regular maintenance of garden machinery and equipment
Maintenance of flowerbeds and indoor plant displays
Developing plans alongside the owner in the growth of the garden
The ideal person is well organised and confident with a proactive attitude. They should have good communication skills and the ability to work well by themselves and with others. They must be able to keep accurate records and be aware of currant relevant Health and Safety policy.
