Birmingham is changing….and fast! The second city is booming with a whole range of ambitious new development and regeneration initiatives. Are you interested in helping to shape our city for future generations?

We are looking to appoint to a Principal Arboriculturist position to help manage the city’s extensive tree coverage. You will be working for one of the country’s largest planning authorities within a can-do Directorate that combines a range of service areas; all co-located in modern offices in the city centre.

You will have the opportunity to help deliver the City Council’s growth plans, which comprise the development of 51,000 new homes including a sustainable urban extension of 6,000 homes; major retail, office and leisure space including the £1bn Birmingham Smithfield city centre redevelopment; the award winning Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust which is our housing delivery vehicle that has built over 2,000 new homes since 2009; and £4bn of infrastructure projects including the extension of the Midland Metro tram system and the High Speed 2 railway network.

Birmingham City Council’s Planning and Development Department requires an experienced arboriculturist with a broad skills base for the provision of specialist advice in the implementation of the City Council’s approved policies, programmes and plans for the regeneration and enhancement of the City in support of the planning and development process.

Birmingham contains some of Britain’s greenest suburbs which are the subject of significant investment and regeneration. The role that trees play is crucial to retaining the quality environments already enjoyed. Significant challenges also present themselves in managing tree stocks in a climate of significant change supported by the City’s Growth Agenda. The city has aspirations for urban extensions and major investment around the Commonwealth Games, all of which trees must play a positive role.

You will work with a supportive team and we will play to your strengths against a backdrop of interesting and varied casework that will include contributing to strategies, briefs, policies, masterplans and planning applications.

If you are passionate about working in an innovative environment and taking on the challenge of a fast changing city we want to hear from you.

Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent or substantial experience in related field is required.

Registration or membership of appropriate professional institution eg Arboriculture Association.
