Post: Head Gardener

Location: Abbotswood House, Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire

Salary: A competitive remuneration package including on-site accommodation will be offered commensurate with experience

This role requires an enthusiastic, self-motivated and skilled Head or Senior Gardener (looking to step up), with demonstrable ability to manage a small team whilst overseeing outside contractors as necessary.

The Abbotswood Estate is undergoing significant redevelopment under new ownership, as both the Grade II listed house and Grade II* formal gardens are reinstated to their original designs.   The project is in the early stage of development, so the new Head Gardener will join at a time when his/her input will be both valuable and rewarding.

In light of the impending retirement of the incumbent, we are looking for an ambitious Head Gardener to be responsible for the terraced gardens to the south-west of the house as well as a hillside stream and rock garden and extensive informal woodland to the north-east of the house.  In addition, the role will involve maintenance of the drives, verges, fences, and such parkland and other areas between the house and farm which may subsequently be agreed.

The elegant formal gardens have fine herbaceous planting, terraced lawns, lily ponds, a pavilion, a beautiful fountain and a reinstated pergola.  The gardens are interspersed by the finest mature specimen trees and there are views over the park, valley, river and lake below. The broader garden setting to the house has featured 3 times in Country Life and in numerous horticultural publications.  The gardens have been open to the public up to 7 days a year for charity.

This is a hands-on position involving work with the estate team with regard to staffing, overall garden planning and management.  The new Head Gardener will be keen to lead the future direction of the gardens, respectfully maintaining the spirit and intention of its designer, Sir Edward Lutyens (with the possible collaboration of Gertrude Jekyll), whilst improving the existing features and moving the garden forward with new ideas and plantings.

The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and bedding and must demonstrate attention to detail as well as good planning, budgeting and organisational skills.  Knowledge of health and safety standards, ICT competence and a full clean driving licence are essential, whilst expertise in the maintenance of ornamental lawns and grounds, a chainsaw licence and spraying certificates are desirable.

The role will suit someone with knowledge and experience, great attention to detail, a strong work ethic, an ambitious vision, a friendly, outgoing personality and great communication skills.

A range of on-site accommodation is available, which can meet family requirements.

To apply for this position, please email your CV and covering letter saying why you would like the job and how you meet the criteria listed in the role profile using the apply section below. We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applicants from all sectors of society.

Applications should be made as soon as possible, but no later than 6 April, 2018.
