The threats from pests and diseases are a major concern to the UK, and to the nation’s gardeners in particular. Plant health in gardens is one of the four themes in the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) science strategy (https://www.rhs.org.uk/science/pdf/rhs-science-strategy-2015-2019) and the Society had recently reviewed its plant health policies and procedures. As part of the review the RHS has decided to significantly invest in this area including funding two new positions: Scientist / Senior Scientist - Plant Reception Coordinator and Entomologist / Senior Entomologist.
These roles will develop, implement and oversee a programme of activities to improve plant health practice in the RHS, and to provide authoritative and up-to-date advice and information to RHS members and the general public.
Depending on the knowledge, skills and experience recruitment will either be at the Scientist or Senior Scientist grade. A degree in a relevant biological subject, plus a higher degree or equivalent experience managing plant health in a commercial situation is required. Knowledge of plant pest and disease diagnosis and management is required together with knowledge of plant health regulatory requirements, and for the Plant Reception Coordinator role, knowledge of plant certification and quality management systems. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate to scientists and the public, and will be able to work effectively as part of a team and using their own initiative.
