Houghton Hall Park Senior Gardener
Houghton Hall Park Senior Gardener
Community Services - Leisure, Libraries and Countryside
£22,930 - £25,432
37 hours per week
Location: Houghton Regis
More about the role:
Houghton Hall Park is a 17 hectare publicly accessible park located centrally within the town of Houghton Regis. It’s an important asset for our community – and it is getting even better. Thanks to an exciting project, the park has benefitted from large-scale restoration and investment. By improving this fantastic place, we’re making Central Bedfordshire a great place to work and live. As Senior Gardener, you will have an integral role in the new park team.
Central Bedfordshire Council and Houghton Regis Town Council have teamed up for this Heritage Lottery Fund and Big Lottery ‘Parks for People’ funded project. Extensive landscape restoration works took place in 2016, including the recreation of the original formal and kitchen garden. Work has continued, with the construction of a new visitor centre and installation of play features around the park.
We are now looking for an experienced Senior Gardener to manage the day-to-day aspects of park presentation and maintenance, with a particular focus on the kitchen and formal gardens. A key part of the role involves growing fresh fruit and vegetables with community volunteers and educational groups. We expect excellent horticultural standards – the kind that befits a unique historic garden. To achieve them, you will need to train and manage a number of volunteers. Together, you will ensure that we achieve heritage and green flag benchmarks.
As a skilled professional, you will:
- Hold a horticultural qualification – NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in horticulture/amenity horticulture, or demonstrable equivalent knowledge and experience
- Recognise the priorities in establishing and maintaining a kitchen garden and its produce
- Bring considerable senior-level experience of working in heritage parks or gardens
- Demonstrate experience of coordinating and supervising volunteers as well as engaging with members of the public and stakeholders
- Have strong communication and interpersonal skills to help you inspire your volunteer team and interact with a diverse range of people
- Be passionate about historic gardens and their place in the local community
Join us, and you will enjoy excellent benefits plus training opportunities. Even better, you will find your greatness by developing this special place which is already so valued by those who live, visit, or work in Houghton Regis.
