SKILLED GARDENER REQUIRED
We are looking for a motivated individual, with a sound knowledge of horticulture and a minimum of 5 years experience post qualification to work in our RHS Partner Garden, with National Plant Collection, to develop the Nursery and improve the garden along with the owners and groundsman. Initial introduction to the garden from retired Chelsea gold medal winning Head Gardener.
Rossie Estate is an hour’s drive from Edinburgh and 4 miles from the village of Falkland. The Estate consists of the main house that faces south, with garden containing borders of mixed shrub and herbaceous plantings overlooking wetlands with views of the East Lomond. The garden is flanked by well-established beech and lime trees.
A short walk and hidden from Rossie House is the Walled Garden that contains a fully restored Victorian Glasshouse which is kept warm during the winter months. On the walls grow apple and pear trees while a selection of soft fruits are also grown. One quarter of the Walled Garden is devoted to a potager where herbs, flowers, vegetables and fruit are grown.
The Walled Garden is split in 2 by herbaceous borders that run either side of the central path while an established mixed planting runs along the outside of the west wall. A fern border sits outside the north wall under the shade of purple Beech trees.
The heritage daffodil collection is also housed in the walled garden with National Collection status. There is a certain amount of record keeping associated with the collection.
A plant nursery for growing plant material for sale to local business’s and for use in the garden, café, plant sales area and e-commerce with a particular interest in Backhouse plants.
The Estate also has two properties with gardens that are used for holiday lets. There are 3 small woods that are being linked with new native planting schemes as part of the plans to enhance the current wildlife habitats. Rossie Estate is home to the native Red Squirrels. Walkway of woodchips to Woodland Covenanter’s tomb and Woodland Bear Walk.
A gardener is required to help maintain the previous work carried out in the Gardens to a high standard and help with the work to continue the development of the Gardens.
Applicants should have an energetic, enthusiastic and hands on approach, ideally with previous experience of working in a large open to the public garden or estate. Horticultural qualifications, experience working with equipment, record keeping and using basic computer skills, chemical application certificates essential, chainsaw certificates an advantage.
