An exciting and unique lifestyle opportunity has arisen for a Head Gardener to assist in the continued restoration, conservation and ongoing development of the gardens of a historic property overlooking Clonakilty Bay in West Cork, Ireland.  The private residence has recently been renovated by the owners, who now seek an enthusiastic, experienced and knowledgeable Head Gardener to work closely with them to develop and manage the 16 acre garden.

The house is situated in a secluded Gulf Stream location on Inchydoney Island, and a five-minute walk from beautiful Inchydoney beach – the best Blue Flag beach in Ireland.  It is within walking distance of the award winning town of Clonakilty; a friendly, welcoming town with a great community spirit and plenty to do including a vibrant music and festival scene.

The gardens consist of 16 acres of formal and informal planting including lawn, mixed borders, trees and shrubs, 3 ponds, a woodland walk, an area of wild flower meadow, an area of newly planted woodland and areas of rough pasture.  A 2-acre walled garden with glasshouse is being painstakingly restored at present.  The successful candidate, in collaboration with the friendly owners, will be required to manage general care and maintenance of lawns, trees shrubs mixed and herbaceous borders, planters, raised beds, woodland and meadows.  Production of year-round fruit, edible flowers, vegetables, herbs and cut flowers for the house is desired, as is management of the glasshouse and cold frames (including propagation and irrigation). Applicants will take responsibility for Organisation, planning and maintenance of garden records and accounts as well as for the supervision, training and development of individuals including full time, part time staff, volunteers and contractors.

Applicants should have a minimum RHS Level 2 or similar qualification, with sound horticultural and plant knowledge, good physical fitness and strength. A commitment to wildlife-friendly and sustainable garden practices is essential.  Applicants must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, good attention to detail, a working knowledge of health and safety standards (including application of chemicals where required), a keen eye for design and a flexible approach to non-gardening duties on occasion.  A full clean driving licence is essential.  This is a full-time live-out position with attractive remuneration based on experience. Assistance with relocation and associated temporary accommodation can be available to the successful applicant.
