Head Gardener

Helmsley Walled Garden, Helmsley, North Yorkshire

£25,000 p.a

Full time, permanent

A fantastic and unique opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head Gardener to lead the on-going development and horticultural management of the historic Helmsley Walled Garden in the North York Moors National Park.  With Helmsley Castle as it’s backdrop, the stunning 250 year old, 5 acre garden consists of ornamental beds, lawns, meadows, a kitchen garden, physic garden, top and soft fruit and glasshouses all of which need to be maintained to the highest professional standard.

Over 50,000 visitors a year come to the Garden and its Vine House café.  The successful applicant will develop a horticultural vision and plans for the Garden’s displays for visitors to enjoy throughout the season and help to develop the Garden as one of Yorkshire’s must see attractions. A key element of the charity’s work is the provision of a free horticultural therapy service to vulnerable adults within our community and the Head Gardener will be expected to provide horticultural advice to the Horticultural Therapy team.

The ideal candidate will be a genuinely passionate gardener with a keen interest in using plant species to benefit wildlife.  You must able to develop a vision for the Garden, manage gardening staff and volunteers, and be able to interact effectively with the public and visitor groups.

Candidates should hold an academic horticultural qualification, good botanical knowledge and experience of managing volunteers and be confident in vegetable production. You will hold knowledge of all Health & Safety and Compliance requirements relevant to horticulture and have experience with a range of gardening machinery.  Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and be IT literate.  This is a hands-on and management role which would suit an enthusiastic, capable individual able to use their creativity and initiative.
