- Contract Type
Our client is a beautifully refurbished independent Suffolk Garden Centre who are seeking a strong retailer to come in and take over as their Garden Centre Manager. They are seeking:
A top retail candidate ideally with a background from a large established garden centre chain or very strong independent with experience across all aspects of garden centre operations. We would also be interested in applications from retailers from associated fields such as home and giftware.
The perfect candidate needs to present and think as a "retailer"
Strong experience with home and gift products is important - ideally at the planning, buying, merchandising and stock control levels. Visual merchandising skills would be a significant asset here - including strong evidence of visual flair and fluency across the target demographic.
Good understanding of "Lifestyle" retailing and merchandising and the concept of garden centres as "venues" - including the importance of developing offers including service
Excellent EPOS skills for buying and stock management - including understanding of promotion to clear stock.
Evidence of ability to maximize stock turn.
Hot on customer service - the basics and the future trends.
Understanding of competition and how to keep up.
Strong evidence of people management skills - especially managing change. Great people skills - good at building teams and consensus - but not afraid to rock the boat and enforce rules when necessary.
The position is for a modern retail manager - this involves the majority of time being spent on the shop floor albeit at a work station for some of that time (circa 60%). So office only time would be limited (circa 40%) - we need to be sure the future Garden Centre Manager has experience of this method of working and can lead a team of managers working in the same way.
Holds people to high standards on the basics (e.g. uniform, time keeping) and instils pride in the team. Ability to set the right "tone" across the store.
Robust and able to drive change.
Speaks their mind but knows when to apply tact and diplomacy.
A strong interest in what we do - so a love of lifestyle products, food, gardening and pets - would be ideal.
Opportunity for the right candidate:
For the right candidate this is an opportunity to take charge of a refurbished garden centre and drive growth - with the potential to double turnover. The direction of travel is for Our Client to be a modern garden centre encompassing the best of other garden centres in the UK while at the same time coming up with its own fresh, quirky ideas - so an exciting opportunity for personal input from a keen and committed Garden Centre Manager.
Excellent salary package - basic salary, pension, car, medical insurance. Profit related bonus could be discussed as part of this package too.
