Top fruit specialist
A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join our growing garden team. The successful candidate will have relevant horticultural training plus experience with top fruit.
The gardens of this beautiful country estate near Bruton, Somerset are currently undergoing complete redesign and will be opening to the public in the near future, so this is a great time to join us. The garden team will therefore need to interact well with the public and conduct tours - so we are looking for someone that will also enjoy this aspect of the role. The estate is a mix of formal gardens, kitchen gardens, greenhouses, fruit production including an espalier tree maze, orchards and woodlands.
The 30 acre traditional cider orchards were planted in 2015 and the espalier maze desert apple trees have been planted this year. There is also a crab apple orchard and various other fruit trees across the estate all of which require dedicated, skilled management.
We are looking for someone with experience in this field plus good knowledge of pests and diseases, but who is also committed to managing the system as naturally as possible. In addition, the person will receive regular guidance and training with the espalier trees from our visiting fruit expert, so it’s a wonderful opportunity to gain excellent training in this specialist field.
This will be a hands-on position but also overseeing a small team when assistance is required, however the successful candidate will also be someone that enjoys planning and organisation and has good IT skills. The person needs to be flexible, enjoy being part of a team, hardworking and reliable, comfortable with operating garden machinery (any certificates an advantage) have their own transport and be over 25 and with a clean driving license for insurance reasons. Experience of working in a public estate setting would be advantageous.
The position offered is and permanent following a three-month trial period.
