A very attractive opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to join our growing garden team. The successful candidate will have relevant horticultural training plus the confidence and experience to set up and run the garden’s nursey in conjunction with the overall garden plan.

The gardens of this beautiful country estate near Bruton in Somerset are currently undergoing complete redesign and will be opening to the public in the near future, so this is a great time to join us.

The estate is a mix of formal gardens, kitchen gardens, greenhouses, fruit production including an espalier tree maze, orchards and woodlands. The garden nursery is a newly created area away from the main garden site. The purpose of the nursery is to propagate plants for the kitchen garden and main gardens focussing on plants that are not easily purchased or are wanted at specific times, to house large potted plants that are used for display in the main gardens and glasshouse and one greenhouse is for growing top quality produce for the restaurant. This is also where plant deliveries will be taken and cared for. The greenhouses are fully irrigated but the final fit out will take place in consultation with the newly appointed person. The nursery team leader will work closely with the vegetable garden and ornamental garden team leaders, but will primarily be based at the nursery site which is 1.5 miles from the main estate.

We are looking for someone with a wealth of experience in this field plus excellent knowledge of pests and diseases, who is also dedicated to managing the system as naturally as possible – so knowledge of biological and cultural controls would be advantageous.

This will be a hands-on position but also overseeing a small team at times. The person must be happy working hands-on but also someone that enjoys planning and organisation. The applicant needs to be flexible, enjoy being part of a team, IT literate, hardworking and reliable, comfortable with operating garden machinery (any certificates an advantage) have their own transport and be over 25 and with a clean driving license for insurance reasons. Experience of working in a public estate setting would be advantageous.

The position offered is full-time (40 hours per week) and permanent following a three-month trial period.
