Gardner Job Senior Horticulturalist Merseyside

(42615)  Our client is looking for an experience Senior Horticulturalist to join an existing team on a large formal estate in Merseyside.  The estate is comprised of parkland, formal lawns, woodland and walled gardens surrounding the main property and other residences.  This role will encompass both the formal established gardens on the estate and also working on new projects with the client.

You will be part of a team reporting to the Head of Parks & Gardens.

Main duties and responsibilities will include:

Alongside the Head of Parks and Gardens, manage all day-to-day aspects of excellent garden presentation and cyclic maintenance.
Undertake a range of gardening duties, including pruning and planting to specified horticultural standards.
Ensure the Head of Parks and Gardens is updated in the duties required within the gardens and number of staff needed to fulfil this to ensure that work standards are maintained.
Undertake plant propagation duties to include: seed sewing, pricking out, potting on and taking cuttings.
Assist in the development of a long-term strategy and planting schemes for the gardens.  The aim is to develop and present the gardens and grounds in a way that is sympathetic to the historic stately home to which they relate.
Snow clearance, the salting of pathways in icy conditions, and clearance of leaves.
Alongside the Head of Parks and Gardens, ensure that any team members working alongside you receive adequate instruction and training for them to carry out their duties safely and competently.
Ensure and promote the correct use and operation of machinery and equipment; undertake and be responsible for the application of a wide range of herbicides, pesticides, fungicides and fertilisers. Ensure the recommended manufacturers guidelines and application rates are adhered to in order to ensure that all defined areas are maintained to the required standards.
Ensure that risk assessments are undertaken to eliminate or control risk, and to ensure safe working practices are developed and implemented to minimise risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
Work alongside the Head of Parks and Gardens to ensure that all machinery and tools are maintained regularly and kept in good and safe working order.
Ensure effective liaison and consultation takes place including the provision of any necessary information to any person, contractor or business, which might be affected by work activities.
Assist with non-gardening duties as and when required.

Successful candidates will
Have a vision and passion for horticulture and gardens.
Have excellent in-depth plant knowledge and sound knowledge of a range of horticultural and gardening topics including plant propagation, greenhouse management, lawn care and maintenance, management of herbaceous borders, pest and disease identification and control methods.
Should have excellent communication skills be self-motivated and be a team player.
Should have good knowledge of machinery and a diverse horticultural background.
Be able to carry out the physical requirements of the role, including carrying heavy loads, working outdoors in all weather conditions, kneeling, digging etc.
Have a minimum of 3 years professional gardening experience including flower beds.
Have a relevant horticultural qualification or equivalent experience and training.
PA1/PA6 spraying certificates required.
Chainsaw and First Aid certificates advantageous.

Full valid driving license essential, trailer licence is an advantage.

Normal working hours will be working 5 out of 7 days averaging 40 hours per week.  Occasional work on weekends and bank holidays may be required.
