Avon Bulbs is a long established and highly regarded business involved in the growing, and selling of bulbous plants mostly by mail order and to support that, attending some of the bigger UK flower shows where their admired displays are aimed to promote interest in the variety of bulbs that we sell.

Role Summary

To work collaboratively as part of the nursery team on the growing side of this commercial nursery and in particular taking charge of the planning, planting, maintaining, harvesting and grading of produce grown on site, mostly in the open ground but also potted material and some plants under cover.

To help transport material to the flower shows that we attend, to help build exhibits at those shows, to help staff those events with enthusiasm and to engage with the public there. This will require some weekend working.

The post holder reports to the Nursery Manager and the Owner.

Plant management

Plan and prepare outdoor growing beds, plant, maintain, weed, lift, clean, grade the large range of bulbs and plants that are grown.

Assist with the propagation of a large collection of snowdrops and the record keeping associated with this, potting and labelling with accuracy.

Preparing material for sale by mail order, preparing plants for sale or exhibition at shows.

Team work

Assist the Nursery Manager in his tasks and sometimes supervise and lead other staff on the nursery.


Work with and maintain a range of horticultural tools, ensuring safe working practice is adhered to.


Help to load, drive and unload a lorry going to the shows. Assist with the preparations ahead of a show, the building of exhibits and the manning of the sales tables at the shows.

Health and Safety

Take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others with whom they work.

Comply with all the relevant Health and Safety and COSHH regulations


Knowledge Skills and Experience Requirements

Essential Knowledge

A National Diploma in Horticulture or equivalent Level 3 qualification.

Well proven relevant industry experience.

Good plant knowledge

Practical garden skills and the use of powered machinery and equipment.

Good IT skills

A clean UK driving licence

Additional Skills that would be an advantage

Fork Lift driving qualification and experience

First Aid qualifications

HGV driving licence
