A fantastic position has become available to join our small team of professional gardeners managing, maintaining and developing two large gardens and one 300 acre estate in sussex.

The preferred candidate will have experience in all types of garden maintenance and horticulture as well some basic knowledge of landscaping. The estate also has 200 acres of ancient and newly planted woodland which requires ongoing management including coppicing, thinning and lifting works. It would be ideal for the candidates to be NPTC qualified in chainsaw use but this is not essential as training can be given if required.

Two of the properties have fully working vegetable gardens and glasshouses of which we manage and are expected to provide both homes with delicious home grown vegetables, salads and fruit throughout the year. The candidate would need to have at least a basic knowledge of propagation and growing.

As well as the vegetable growing we are also expected to provide the estate house with fresh cut flowers from the walled garden which are arranged and delivered each week to the clients requirements.

The candidate must be able to use all basic machinery and tools required for this position. this will include ride on mowers, push mowers, streamers, clearing saws, hedge cutters, blowers and small tractors

Much of the work is plant based and will include ongoing planting projects as well as managing the existing borders, wild meadows, hedges, topiary, rose gardens, fruit cages.

To give the candidate an idea of the work that will be expected of them I have compiled a list of areas which are included in all three properties:

  • Walled gardens
  • Vegetable gardens
  • Glasshouses
  • Orchards
  • Herbaceous borders
  • Rose gardens
  • Formal lawns
  • Cut flower gardens
  • Wildflower meadows
  • Arboretum
  • Formal hedges
  • Topiary
  • Ponds
  • Woodlands

As well as maintaining the above areas there will also be many development projects which will include the following:

  • Prairie meadow planting
  • Rockery build
  • Dry stone walling
  • New paths, plinths, steps and other hard landscaping projects
  • Fencing
  • Hedge planting
  • Border creation and planting
  • Mass bulb planting

It is imperative the chosen candidate has great people skills as they will be expected to converse with the clients on a regular basis and build a strong working relationship with them.

The chosen candidate will be expected to work as part of a team but must also be able to work well on their own and be able to manage and plan their work efficiently.

All three properties are run by the Managing Director with whom the candidate will work closely with on a nearly daily basis.

The salary stated is dependant on experience and qualifications. There will be an opportunity for the right person to be further trained through college courses to further their knowledge and experience.

The candidate will be expected to make their own way to site each day and will CRB checked before employment can commence
