An experienced Head Gardener is required for large country gardens and grounds in Kent.

They comprise just under 10ac of organic Country House gardens with extensive herbaceous borders, pinetum, vegetable gardens, glasshouses, ponds and hedging. The appointed person will be required to direct, motivate and coordinate a small established team as well as work in a creative partnership with the Employer. Applicants will need to be physically fit, have detailed knowledge of organic horticulture and arboriculture, experience in leading a team, managing contractors and be aware of health and safety standards. Level 2 Horticultural qualifications (RHS 2 or equivalent), good I.T skills and a full clean driving licence are essential.

This is an opportunity for an enthusiastic gardener to maintain and develop the gardens around a historic house with an established team of gardeners. The gardens are at a private family home within 10 minutes of Canterbury. They comprise just under 10ac of organic:

• lawns

• extensive herbaceous borders

• pinetum

• vegetable gardens

• glasshouses

• ponds

• wild flower meadow

• extensive hedging

• formal areas

• Japanese garden

• orchards


The applicant will need to direct, motivate and coordinate a small established team of gardeners. They must also be able to work in a creative partnership with respect for the Employers wishes, yet have the confidence to voice constructive opinions. The role will cover a wide range of work to include:

• daily horticultural management

• strategic maintenance

• garden designs in partnership with the Employer

• lead a team of gardeners

• manage contractors

• ability to organise and maintain daily garden records

• health and safety records

• manage plant collections and instigate plant and tree care programs

Skills required for the role

• Level 2 Horticultural qualifications (RHS 2 or equivalent)

• At least five years’ post qualifying full time work experience

• At least three years’ experience in a similar environment managing a team of gardeners

• Ability to lead and organise a small and productive team

• Ability to train and develop individuals

• Willingness to turn their hands to anything and experiment with new techniques

• An interest in Japanese gardens is desirable

• Applicants will need to be physically fit as this is a hands on gardening position.

• Good computer skills are essential as a way to develop and organise the annual work schedules

• Full, clean driving licence


Role - Head Gardener

Hours - 8am – 4:30 pm with a break of one hour split throughout the day (times to be agreed with the Employer)
