A garden dramatic and intimate, bold and accessible; Nymans also holds one of the National Trust’s great plant collections. The garden was created around the expeditions of Frank Kingdom- - Ward, George Forrest, and Harold Comber and features outstanding specimens from China, Nepal, Tasmania, Chile, South Africa and New Zealand. More open and flowing than a ‘garden of rooms’, the June Border, Rose Garden, Sunk Garden, South African meadow, Rock garden and famous Summer Borders representing Nymans’ distinctive blend of formality and informality to perfection.
About the role
In your role you will be based in the glasshouse and nursery, you’ll assist in making sure that the Nymans nursery is maintained to a high standard and be passionate and enthused by plants. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks and varied propagation work. You will also help with management of the nursery volunteers and support junior members of staff, trainees and interns. You will also be expected to liaise with our plant centre team on the weekly delivery of plants that we grow in our nursery especially for the plant centre known as ‘The Nymans Collection’.
You’ll love working outdoors and understand that our gardens and grounds are as significant as our mansion houses and our historical places. Other key parts of the role are helping with, our IPM programme, propagation for both the garden and the plant centre and helping to take Nymans to the next level on our environmental practices, including working towards a no chemical policy over the next three years.
As a property that is garden led you will be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis, answering the many questions, help with propagation workshops, nursery tours and help set up events when needed. You will also be expected to work occasional weekends as part of a rota.
The role is 4 days a week, working the core part of the week is essential, but other days can be flexible.
Nymans is a garden of experimentation and innovation and pioneers green practices in the National Trust. So we want someone that is creative and thinks outside the box and can help share our magical story with visitors and supporters of all ages and backgrounds. We want you to have an eye for detail and experience of looking after and the maintenance of both plants and a working nursery area. Experience working with and leading teams of volunteers is also desirable. We don’t want you to just tend to the nursery but be proud of it, and be comfortable sharing your knowledge with our interested visitors.
To be successful in this role you should be able to demonstrate the following:
- RHS Level 2 (or equivalent)
- Excellent understanding of horticultural techniques and plant identification
- Confidence to participate in garden activities and events
- Competence with garden machinery/equipment use
