A versatile gardener is needed to maintain and develop the gardens and grounds of a private family estate between Truro and Falmouth in south Cornwall. The garden covers 15 acres and includes lawns, orchard, pinetum, shrubberies, a developing flower garden, glasshouses including vines and citrus trees, and a woodland garden. There is also a one acre walled garden, growing fruit and vegetable and a cutting garden. This is set in parkland and surrounded by fields and woodland.
You are an enthusiastic plantsman with an interest in propagation and have a proven full range of estate gardening skills. You can work alone and with others (currently one apprentice) including volunteers and have the usual certificates in spraying (PA1/PA6), brushcutting and chainsaw (CS30CS31) use and are able to maintain estate machinery. Cutting, splitting and transporting of wood for a large log boiler is part of the job.
As the post will involve work in the woodlands and from time to time at other estate properties a driving licence (Categories B and E) is essential. There will be frequent use of ATV and some use of tractor and mini-digger.
You are of course personable, honest, reliable and flexible, giving attention to detail whilst retaining a wide vision. Mutual trust and loyalty are essential. You will be able both to take direction from the estate owners and to work with a high level of autonomy, planning and carrying out your own work schedule. As an experienced gardener you are happy to work in all weather and capable of heavy work when needed.
40 hours per week Monday to Friday, 20 days holiday + bank holidays. This is a live-out position, but estate accommodation may be available by negotiation.
Post available in early January. Apply by CV and supporting information by email.
