Head Gardener - Live out
Eldred House is a privately owned Georgian property surrounded by 52 acres. These comprise of formal gardens, mixed borders, parterres, a yew walk and extensive ancient woodland. There is a kitchen garden with greenhouse and poly tunnel, a wildflower meadow, a woodland dell, spring fed ponds, and an orchard. A historic barn and dovecote will form the centrepiece of a new walled kitchen garden, currently being designed. The gardens have previously featured in Gardens Illustrated and Country Life magazines.
The owners, working with a renowned garden designer, are creating a new long-term Master Plan for the entire estate and for the right and ambitious candidate this offers the opportunity to have significant input into that overall layout and estate design.
A full time (preferred) Head Gardener is required to oversee an excellent, committed & hard working team in the development and maintenance of the estate. We are looking for an individual with experience in a wide range of skills, for this hands on and high standards position.
Responsibilities will include:
Enhancement and seasonal maintenance of all garden areas, including pruning and training, hedge trimming, mulching, weed control, fertiliser and herbicide application, irrigation, tree planting and ongoing care.
Management and monitoring of woodland areas, vegetative seed propagation and growing on of plants, plus managing equipment maintenance and servicing. Liaising with outside contractors, organising additional labour if required, and managing garden accounts for the estate.
Experience in managing a similar garden is essential, and the successful candidate must have strong communication and leadership qualities to ensure a positive relationship with the team and employer.
Applicants should be qualified to appropriate RHS level & / or have a relevant degree in horticulture or similar, as well as having a number of years of practical experience.
Salary is negotiable dependant upon experience.
