Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, Burford, Oxfordshire

Deputy Head Gardener

This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to the continued development of one of the country’s most progressive and dynamic gardens.  We are among the UK’s top Zoos attracting 360K visitors a year. Horticulture is an increasingly important part of the visitor experience throughout our 160 acre site; we have become a popular destination for plant and gardening enthusiasts. We are a RHS Partnership Garden.

‘Theatre with Plants’ is what we are about. Our diverse plant collection includes mature and recently planted trees; shrubs; meadows; woodland; herbaceous; grasses & bamboo; cacti & succulents; insectivorous. A Tropical House extends the range. We are well known for our extensive and exuberant outdoor seasonal displays of tender perennials with an exotic flavour.  Formal & informal bedding and a range of planters are changed twice a year. We have a Glass House, Polytunnel and a new Keder Plant House.

Working closely with the animal keepers we aim to create a naturalistic, immersive atmosphere in and around our animal exhibits. We also provide browse plus other edibles and enrichment items for the animals.

As Deputy Head Gardener you will have a hands-on role responsible for the day to day direction of our established, motivated and valued Gardens team, and the horticultural eliments of the Park. Your main focus will be on the plants and borders - we have a Grounds team that looks after most of the grass, paths and hard landscaping.

Hours are 40 per week plus some weekends. Salary is dependent on experience. Accommodation is offered with the position.
